The board has a brake that the rider can operate using a lever. A video taken during a visit in April shows him riding the board down both the California Street and Hyde Street hills.

This is bad idea and he could have killed himself if he had encountered a switch or an irregular bit of track. Please don't do this. Isle of Man Railways, with the advice of Ray Cox of Milan Vets, have made the decision to temporarily cease all horse tram operations for approximately ten days. The decision has been taken after a number of the tram horses were found to be experiencing a respiratory issue. The infection is relatively common among horses and it is difficult to determine where it has originated.

It is not fatal to horses, but it can be transmitted between them. Action to contain the infection and to manage the recovery of the affected horses will be taken in line with veterinary advice. The infection cannot be passed to humans. However, the welfare of the horses always comes first. We are confident that the horses will make a full recovery and we will work with the vets to resume our services as soon as possible.

Among the people interviewed are gripman Val Lupz and historian Emiliano Echeverria. We all owe a big thanks to the Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway , which has worked hard to keep the line intact. We all have to remain vigilant. It was older than San Francisco's Powell Street cable car lines. A program from the inaugural Cable Car Classic in The Santa Clara Broncos have hosted the holiday basketball tournament since Santa Clara won the tournament.

Step one would be to build a temporary museum in Mornington Park. The museum would house three Dunedin cable trams, one from the Mornington Tramway and two from the Roslyn Tramway. One of the Roslyn trams will be restored onsite.

There will be a track that extends outside so people can view one of the trams and climb on it. The remaining steps would build a 1. Original cable trams would be used as rolling stock. An article from the October Otago Daily Times. The reason I mention it on this page is that Hughes contacted me earlier this year for permission to use an image of a Geary Street, Park and Ocean cable train. According to articles from newspapers all over the United States, in July or August, , when Mosby would have been 57 or 58 years old, he got into a "fracas" with the crew of a Geary Street cable train.

Updated - October I didn't get to go, but read a little bit about it and find a link to some photos: The local government had decided that the line cost too much money to maintain. The line had three stations and the cars operated at 28 miles per hour. This was a test run to see if the car would make it.

Gripman Val Lupiz said the car performed beautifully. Film shoots like this raise some money to maintain the railroad. Car 9 has an earlier version of the White Front colors, with red window sashes. I respect the way she worked to get the facts right. On January, the Douglas Borough Council decided that since the line was losing money, it would be immediately terminated and would not begin service in its th year.

This short-sighted decision drew a storm of controversy from the Manx and from around the world. Many people who would have visited Man to ride the trams will not go there. On January, the lower house of the Manx Parliament, the House of Keys, appointed a committee to look for alternatives that could preserve the horse-drawn trams.

I signed two online petitions.

How infinite in faculty! In form, in moving, how express and admirable! In action, how like an angel! In apprehension, how like a god! Surely, you don't see your species like that, do you? I see us one day becoming that, Q. Is that what concerns you? I wish your father could control you as well as he does this ship!

You should go into business with a glazier. You would have a very symbiotic relationship. What's that supposed to mean? I merely meant that you tend to leave a lot of broken glass behind. Edmund questions Percy minutely regarding what he knows of both, leading to this conclusion: So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen.

What's the point of being an outlaw when you got responsibilities? Darth Vader had responsibilities. He was responsible for the Death Star. This is something that I've always wanted! You have things you want — you're always going on about going to Asia and seeing the Taj Mahal.

I do want to go to Asia! I do want to see the Taj Mahal! The difference is, the Taj Mahal didn't sleep with its boss behind my back and break my heart! Alexander the Great never had this trouble! Yeah well, he wasn't a complete dickhead, was he? I agree, Bernard, no man is an island, entire of itself, and therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee, Bernard.

How come he gets the cowboys, while I'm stuck with the Indians? It takes more than a sound body to make a stallion run. It takes a sound heart, and a sound mind. It also takes a rider who's not afraid to go to the whip! Oh, it's classic, Henry. The ammo dump, the road. Store material near hospitals so the enemy will leave it alone. Learned it from the Germans.

I once fell off a horse and a man came up to me and said 'young lady, you better get right back on'. Of course this horse was on a merry-go-round If JD were drowning and he told you he didn't want you to save him, would you do it? Maybe he want one of them to jump in and save him. My swallowed analogy looks pretty sweet right now, doesn't it? Well, I don't have the money! You can't get blood from a stone, man. Why are you being so crazy about this case?

Because I wanted to work the toughest case we had! It would feel awesome to solve it. Because a real man doesn't run from a challenge. I mean, do they run from the bulls in Pamplona? That's the whole point of it. We can make this work! We're Romeo and Juliet! It didn't work for Romeo and Juliet. That play ends in a tragic double suicide. That's how it ends? Why do people like it so much?

You're like Bonnie and Clyde. If I had my talent working, I could have warned you when he was coming. So, you think of me as something bright and cheerful, full of toys and candy for young children? That makes me feel much better about our relationship.

And you called yourself my Moses. Like the real Moses, he won't be joining you in the promised land. How would you feel if you planned a wedding shower for three months, then the night of the wedding shower, I bring all the guys over to watch football?

And you didn't like it, did ya? Jon hanging his head out of a fast-moving car: This is better than sex! The first couple of stanzas use the titular simile to refer to how famous their romance is going to be.

By the end, the singer is speculating about how, if he doesn't get his act together, their love will be destroyed by tragedy. Just like Romeo and Juliet. Which provides a little Fridge Horror , actually, about the song. You can see the headlines about a murder-suicide brought on by his lack of employment. Amanda Palmer 's "Ampersand" also gets the analogy right: Given her general sensibilities , this is quite possibly intentional.

The song "I Found a Loophole" by wizard rock band the Whomping Willows contains this tongue-in-cheek aversion: Possibly an aversion, since the point of the song is how their love is very difficult like in Romeo and Juliet and The Scarlet Letter , but the end of the song shows that both end up Happily Ever After , so yeah The scarlet letter is actually a badge of shame given for adultery, so I don't think he'd want that Then again, maybe it refers to her parent's reaction to the boy she wanted to date.

What makes this possibly more painful is that the Happily Ever After is just handed to her without any effort. One moment she's questioning whether he even loves her anymore, the next all the problems have gone away and he's proposing to her. As Todd in the Shadows points out, people also deposit sperm there. Another example Todd pointed out is " Firework ". Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as the Northern star" And I said "Constantly in the darkness? In a Dilbert comic, the Pointy-Haired Boss used an apple to represent the company's "core values". Dilbert pointed out that the apple's core is the part you throw away and added "maybe the stem can represent our loyalty to the company".

Dilbert was actually very fond of this. In commentary, Scott Adams wrote that all analogies are bad. Yet another one has the PHB tell Asok that interns are as important to a company as minks are to a coat.

Asok pointed out that minks do not enjoy the benefits of a coat. Jason says that Gregor starved to death, abandoned by his family. It then transpires that Peter had never actually finished was still on the first page of the book.

At the beginning of Act V of William Shakespeare 's The Merchant of Venice , recently married lovers Lorenzo and Jessica recite to each other a poem comparing themselves to other famous lovers. However, the stories of all the other lovers they mention end in deception, death, or both. It may not be obvious to modern audiences and, as Shakespeare never has anyone call Lorenzo and Jessica on this, it may not have been caught by the audience of his day.

Mary dies because of Jimmy, and Jimmy is arrested for her murder. It's surprisingly tragic for such a funny movie. Explaining a female-figured suit of armor as "you're my Joan of Arc" runs into the problem that not only was Joan of Arc killed, but she dressed as a man. Emily points out both in one sentence. So when it comes to playing massed combat situations, one way to decide what to do is to take guidance from historical military campaigns.

Emulating the victor is the easy way. If attempting to defend an impossible position with bowmen and knights on foot against Genoese crossbowmen and tens of thousands of armoured, mounted knights, make sure you are heavily outnumbered. If attempting to repel a force of cavalry and men-at-arms with longbowmen on St Crispin's Day, make sure you are vastly outnumbered.

If defending a hospital stockade against Zulus , make sure you are enormously outnumbered. You can choose a different, and more creative, path by doing the opposite of what the losers did. If you field an overwhelming force against a paltry number of defenders, whatever you do, make sure the defenders are not English! I slept like a baby! California Street Collison - August The Chronicle reports that an inbound California Street cable car rear-ended another cable car car at California and Drumm this morning.

Four passengers were injured. This curve was poorly redesigned when the system was rebuilt in The crew got off of the car to push. When it started rolling down the hill on Washington, the gripman jumped on the back platform and passed through the cabin.

He found that the front cabin door was jammed and he could not get through. The car hit the curve into Powell too fast and derailed. Muni stated that the crew may have broken the rules by not keeping one person the car while it was out in the street. He was a good guy and was always generous about sharing his knowledge.

Val wrote a very good article about his memories of transit in San Francisco, "San Francisco: That Was the City That Was". Explosion at California and Drumm - June Manhole covers flew through the air by the terminal of the California Street line, where I had been standing just the day before.

Pacific Gas and Electric was trying to determine the cause. Cal cable service was interrupted for a while. Rebuilt Car 25 Rolls out - May Rebuilt car 25 went into revenue service after a complete rebuilding. There are big obstacles before them, but I hope that it will work. The counter shot through the roof. The book uses large, colorful photographs and graphics, and simple, clear text, to describe cable cars and the people who work on them and ride them.

I enjoyed reading it. California Cable Unstranded - September Val Lupiz took this photo at California and Drumm after the cable unstranded and caught car 52, which rear-ended car 59, which rear-ended car Fortunately, the cars were laying over at the end of the line and no one was hurt. Edinburgh -- Revenge of the Cable Trams - April An article in The Scotsman report that engineers preparing for Edinburgh's new tram system have been surprised to discover that many of the streets still contain the conduits from Edinburgh's cable tram system, which was electrified in Further studies will have to determine whether the conduits are strong enough to support the new trams.

The article made sure to mention that cable tram were invented by a Scot. Conductors point out that their primary task is to ensure the safety of riders and to work the rear brakes. The cars and trackway have been renovated, and work should start soon on replacing the driving machinery and adding some safety devices that had not been included when the line was restored in The article stresses how the neighborhood has changed since the accident. Cable Cars" - November KGO Channel 7 ran an "investigative" piece saying that Department of Transporation records indicate that cable cars have the highest accident rate of any type of Muni vehicle.

I posted a rebuttal on their blog: In comparing the accident rates of cable cars and other forms of transit in San Francisco, it is important to remember that cable cars operate in some of the most congested streets in the city.

Cable car crews have suggested that the accident rate would be much better if the city put more effort into enforcing traffic and parking regulations on the streets where the cable cars operate.

Dear Friends and Merchants: Our annual Luncheon has become an event eagerly looked forward to by many seniors. For some, this may be their only opportunity to celebrate the holiday season with a hot meal and warm companionship. Through the cooperation and volunteer services of many of our own Cable Car Division personnel, the Luncheon has become a rousing success, bringing a much needed boost to these sometimes forgotten people, during what can often be a difficult and lonely holiday season.

We hope to carry on this tradition with your generous help. Transportation for attendees will be provided by special shuttle buses provided by Muni and operated by Cable Car personnel. We would gratefully accept any contributions, but we do particularly request donations of foods cooked meats, vegetables, drinks, rolls and pastries, salads, etc. Any monetary donations or items that could be used as door prizes are also very much welcomed. Your donations are entirely tax deductible please see contact names below for more details.

We ask that you please join us once again. Newspaper articles mentioned that grip shanks were getting stuck in the slots. Collision on California Street - Sep Newspaper articles reported that the five dollar fare has reduced cable car ridership.

I don't like to say I told them so Many people were upset at being charged the five dollar cable car fare for a ride from the cable car barn to the outer terminal. There was another loose strand on Jun April 18 Events - Apr My wife and I caught the 4: People were standing by Balboa Park and our car had a crush load after Glen Park. We walked down to Third and Market. The street was closed at Fourth. There was a large screen in the street before Grant, showing images of the earthquake survivors arriving for the ceremony.

There was another screen on Third. There were more people than I had ever seen for the ceremony at Lotta's Fountain. The news reports said people. Firemen raised a 60 foot ladder and a fireman climbed it and hung a flag for the singing of the National Anthem.

They had trouble getting the wreath to hang on the fountain. The moment of silence wasn't. Then church bells rang and sirens wailed. The mayor interviewed the 12 or so survivors and one lady made a pass at him. After, we headed for Starbucks. We went down to Powell Station and caught an outbound J. All Muni service was free for the day. The single J car had a standing load out to 20th for the golden fire hydrant ceremony.

There were more people there than usual. They had to wait for some old fire trucks to arrive. The chief led off the spray-painting. Then her three sons and the fire department brass and the fire commissioners.

Many other people got turns. I chatted with a retired Alameda fireman who had come over with their restored engine. Some people arrived in a Locomobile. After the ceremony, we caught a PCC heading into service on the F. We had to get off at Market and transfer to a Milano car that was ahead in line. The motorperson said she could only take us to Van Ness. There were several cars on 11th street. They were getting ready to close Market at 9th for the parade.

My wife had never been to the celebration. She wasn't happy with the people who pushed and those who put large children up on their shoulders, but she enjoyed it.

My sister-in-law and her family came into town for the parade. My niece didn't understand why the horses were last till she saw what the horses did on the pavement. It is a detailed history of public transit in this area of Malaysia. I particularly enjoyed the drawing which illustrated the liveries used at different times. The southbound cable car was climbing the hill and reportedly hit her outside of the crosswalk. Mayor Insults Cable Car Crews - Jan Mayor Gavin Newsom that on more than one occasion he had ridden cable cars and seen conductors pocket the five dollar fare without giving receipts.

Rather than follow normal procedures and get the number of the car and report the alleged thefts to Muni, the mayor raised the issue in a news conference. Some people feel that he did this to distract attention from other issues that had recently embarassed his administration.

In the following days, the mayor met with cable car division employees, but refused to apologize for slandering them. Cal New Year's Eve - Dec California Street cable cars used the crossover at California and Kearney to turn back after 10pm because of the large crowds around the Drumm Street terminal.

This crossover is used only rarely. Through the words of employees past and present representing two generations of operators, managers, maintainers, trainers, and car builders, you will get an insider's look at what makes the cable cars the most unique transit system in the world.

The building still stands. Here is Val's description: There are two "rides" on each CD. Each Ride consists of a sequential series of photos starting from the inner terminal of the line to the outer terminal and return. Included are maps, photo indices for each line, a text article highlighting specific pictures and additional information concerning the lines, "Fake-of-the-Month Club," short "bonus" rides, memorabilia and occasional CARtoons.

A new CD is issued every other month. The crew was to call in a Code to stop the rope before there was a collision. A half-block section of the rope was damaged. No people were hurt and no cars were damaged. The car is currently located in the trolley barn at Kelley Park. Many generations of kids grew up playing on this genuine San Francisco cable car. This car was never converted from side grip to center grip when Muni took over Cal Cable.

The car is in poor condition. When it was moved from the fairgrounds the frame broke. A picture can be seen at http: You will need to transport it from the trolley barn by yourself. Take the K-Ingleside streetcar to Ocean and Victoria. Refreshments will be provided. Hairball on Hyde Street - Nov The Hyde Street cable partially unravelled, creating a bundle of strands over feet long.
